PROBLEMS WITH THYROID FUNCTION

Over-function (“hyperthyroidism” or “thryotoxicosis”) and under-function (hypothyroidism) is generally caused by autoimmune disease.

Hyperthyroidism is treated by drugs initially. After such drug treatment, more definitive treatment may be required in the form of either thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine treatment.

Hypothyroidism is treated by thyroxine replacement drugtreatment. If there is also a goitre (thyroid enlargement), this often responds to this also.
